Office coming to iPad, reports suggest | 8 June 2012
Microsoft is to launch an iPad-friendly version of its Office suite later this year, a report from Businessinsider.com has revealed.
The move should make doing business on arguably the world’s most popular tablet much easier, be it for a property professional or financial expert. When used in correlation with the many work-based apps available to iPad users – like those designed for digital workflows or file storage – the Office suite could make for a much more business-friendly tablet.
Rumours have suggested the specially-designed version of Office will be available towards the end of 2012, with November named as a potential month for its release.
Reports have also speculated that the move could be a silly one on Microsoft’s part, as it will further endear Apple’s iPad to the world; potentially proving detrimental to Windows’ tablet sales. The financial rewards of opening Office up to iPad users could outweigh this negative effect though.
For Apple, the move will surely be nothing but positive – especially given its latest market penetration figures. Intoday.in revealed that in the first quarter of 2012 alone, some 11.8 million iPads were sold; accounting for 65 per cent of the 18.2 million tablets sold overall. What’s more, in the latest ChangeWave poll 81 per cent of those using an iPad claimed they were “very satisfied” with their device.
Another 15 per cent labelled themselves “somewhat satisfied”, taking the satisfaction rates for the iPad at 96 per cent. Although no distinction was made between public and business users, the figures speak volumes when it comes to Apple’s share of the tablet market.
To keep its public happy, Apple has also announced plans to launch a new operating system – iOS 6 – which will see iPad users also given access to Siri, the voice recognition-based system currently available to iPhone 4 users.
